Social Impact

Making a difference

Our vision is clean energy and water for all.

Every year we provide funding for the provision of electricity, clean water and sanitation in developing communities around the world.

The money comes from a percentage of our revenue, a percentage of our profits and the fundraising activities of our employees.

“I’m dismayed that 2 billion people still don’t have access to clean water and sanitation. And a billion people have little or no electricity. It’s a huge problem but fortunately our customers are helping us do something about it. In simple terms, we help our customers save energy and water and then we help others to get some energy and water. The crisis is huge but together we’ve already helped thousands of people worldwide.”

Dean Jackson, Managing Director, Azility.

Our Programs

India & Nepal - Ensure local women continue to be empowered as leaders of change

Azility contributed funds to Pollinate Group’s COVID-19 $100 000 for 100 Days campaign. Azility’s funds helped Pollinate Group achieve their $100 000 target to address energy access, poverty and gender inequality in the most neglected communities of India and Nepal. COVID-19 has increased these issues, and progress to date in slum communities and rural villages is being undone.

The funding will ensure local women in poverty can continue to be empowered as leaders of change to distribute products – such as solar lights – that improve health, save time and save money for their peers. The women-led distribution network ensures access to affordable and modern products to replace biomass, coal and kerosene. Additional products that households purchase include solar fans, to combat humidity, heat and mosquitos, and clean cookstoves.

Timor-Leste - Hygiene promotion for COVID-19 infection prevention

Azility contributed funds for WaterAid’s COVID-19 infection protection campaign. WaterAid works with the Government of Timor-Leste to make good hygiene part of people’s normal everyday life. They empower those that are excluded to stand up for their rights, while making sure local governments have the tools and skills to help them. WaterAid is there every step of the way, working together to create lasting change. In collaboration with local governments, WaterAid will deliver COVID-19 hygiene messaging and promote hygiene behaviour change campaigns in the communities by:

○       Providing relevant information and awareness-raising tools at national and local level.

○       Reviewing materials and guidance to identify the most effective ways to adapt and deliver campaign messages.

○       Generating campaign materials that are appropriate to reach groups that may be marginalized or excluded within the community.

○       Adapting materials where necessary, to deliver messaging and information that does not promote stigma and marginalization.

○       Identifying avenues for local partners to support behaviour change initiatives.

Timor-Leste - Water and Sanitation

Azility contributed funds for a water and sanitation project for a village of 249 people using a gravity-fed supply system.  A gravity-fed supply from a small upland river, stream or spring, impounded within a protected catchment, is an example of a sustainable water supply technology requiring no treatment. An additional benefit is that, using the force of gravity, water can be transported by pipework to tapstands placed near to homes, reducing the work involved in carrying water.

The capital costs of gravity-fed schemes are, on average, higher than the costs of schemes that obtain water from underground sources. This is due mainly to the cost of long pipelines from the upland sources down to the villages and partly to the cost of providing storage tanks. However, running costs are usually low; maintenance includes simple tasks such as replacing tap washers and cleaning screens. Reliability is usually high and consequently the level of service is good. The usual components of a gravity-fed scheme are the source (stream, spring, catchment, dam or intake), main pipeline, storage and break-pressure tanks, distribution pipelines and tapstands.

Goroka - Gohikuka Bridge

Community consultation and engagement for the building of the Gohikuka Bridge, and its associated social and environmental enhancement programs.

The foot bridge will provide safe crossing for 3,000 people and will result in cleaner water through re-vegetation of the riparian zone as well as the provision of laundry facilities and effluent management capacity.

Cambodia - Small Scale Electricity Generation

2017 feasibility assessment for small-scale electricity generation in remote communities.

Azility funded a staff member to participate in Project Everest’s Energy and Fuel Assessment team in Cambodia working on goal seven of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Project Everest was seeking to understand if there was need for alternative, more sustainable energy sources and whether Project Everest was well placed to develop social enterprises that sell socially beneficial goods or services surrounding the provision of energy. This involved extensive engagement with local businesses, NGOs and individuals to ensure that all solutions were tailored to the needs of prospective beneficiaries.

Odede - Electricity for Health Centre

Payment of the monthly electricity bill for the Odede Community Health Centre.

The Odede Health Centre is a WYI initiative that brings crucial healthcare services to thousands of people living in extreme poverty every year. It provides maternal and infant health care, HIV testing and support, and many other services. Hundreds of women give birth safely at the Health Centre each year, and community outreach programs provide education and basic medical services for schools and villages around Odede.
